Dr. Theodore Roth Awarded Michelson Prize for Proposal to Genetically Redesign Human Immune Cells

The Michelson Medical Research Foundation has awarded a 2026 Michelson Prizes: Next Generation Grant to Dr. Theodore Roth in recognition of his proposal, “Reimagining Immunity with Synthetic T-Cells: Revolutionary CRISPR-ALL Technology Redefines Immune Capabilities Against Incurable Diseases,” which focuses on genetically redesigning human immune cells in entirely new ways to elicit stronger immune responses against cancer.

About

Dr. Roth is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology at Stanford University. His research focuses on the development, application, and translation of technologies to genetically manipulate human immune cells in cancer immunotherapy settings. He completed his M.D. and Ph.D. at the University of California, San Francisco. During his PhD, Theo developed non-viral genome targeting and pooled knockin screening in human T cells, which has led to multiple active clinical trials in academia and industry. He completed his clinical residency in Pathology at Stanford.
